Ryan Coonerty is a lecturer in Politics, Legal and Jewish Studies at UC Santa Cruz, where he has taught for more than 20 years. His courses explore the First Amendment, civil liberties, law and democracy, constitutional law, and antisemitism and the legal system. He is the author of The Rise of the Naked Economy and Etched in Stone and is currently writing a book about the First Amendment conflict in Skokie, Illinois.
Coonerty has spent his career in public service. He served two terms on the Santa Cruz City Council, including as mayor, and two terms on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. Most recently, he served as senior policy advisor to various elected officials and organizations. He is also executive director of Leadership Santa Cruz County and a consultant to public- and private-sector organizations.
A Rodel Fellow at the Aspen Institute, Coonerty is interested in the intersection of law, public leadership, community problem-solving, and democratic institutions. He grew up in Santa Cruz and remains closely connected to Bookshop Santa Cruz, the independent bookstore founded by his parents. He lives in Santa Cruz with his wife and two children.
