Amarasiri de Silva: Academic Profile

Background and Research

Amarasiri de Silva is a cultural and medical anthropologist whose research focuses on health and illness in Sri Lanka. His fieldwork has been conducted in coastal fishing communities and war-affected areas. A significant aspect of his research explores chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu), an emergent health issue affecting numerous districts in Sri Lanka.

Education

Dr. de Silva earned his BA in Sociology from the University of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and an MSc from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand. He completed his PhD in Anthropology at the University of Connecticut. His master’s degree fieldwork was conducted in a coastal fishing village in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

Teaching Experience

Dr. de Silva has an extensive teaching career. He served as a senior professor and emeritus professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, teaching research methodology, medical anthropology, and applied anthropology. In 2013 and 2014, he taught courses in medical sociology, aging, and global health in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. Since 2020, he has taught at the College Nine of UCSC, where he works.
